Technology such as McCormick's reaper and Deere's steel plow allowed farmers to seed and harvest more quickly and therefore they could farm more area. Irrigation systems and fertilizers was developed during the 1830's and 1840's as well. Irrigation created more fertile land and fertilizers also increased the fertility of the land and the production of crops.
