A plane travels 350 km south along a straight path with an average velocity of 125 km/h to the south. The plane has a 30 minute layover, and then travels 220 km south with an average velocity of 115 km/h to the south. What is the average velocity for the trip?

a.120 km/hr to the south

b.110 km/hr to the south

c. 121 km/hr to the south

Average Velocity = Total Displacement travelled / Total time taken

For the 350 km due south with velocity 125 km/h

time = 350/125 = 2.8 hours.

For the 220 km due south with velocity 115 km/h

time = 220/115 ≈ 1.91 hours.

Average velocity = (350 + 220)/(2.8 + 1.91)

= 570 / 4.71 ≈ 121.02 km/h due south

Option C.

110km/hr to th south.

You find the average time for the first section and the second section then add the .5 of an hour to the tim which ends up being 5.2. You then divide the total distance traveled by the total time and it come up as 110.
