Pontius Pilate was 'governor' of the province of Judaea and was the man  who after much pressure from Jewish high priests and the public sentenced Jesus to his crucifixion.

Pontius Pilate.  He was a Roman Governor of Judaea(26-36 ce) and served under the Emperor Tiberius.  Pilate presided at the trial and ordered Jesus' crucifixion.
