let x be the amount spent at each store.
2x + 24.24 = 100
2x = 75.76
x = $37.88

Answer: He spend $37.88 at the first store.

Explanation:

Since we have given that

Total amount he started shopping with to two stores = $100

Amount he left with = $24.24

According to question, he spend equal amount at both stores.

Let the amount he spend at each store be 'x'.

So, our equation becomes,

2x+24.24=\$100\\\\2x=100-24.24\\\\2x=75.76\\\\x=(75.76)/(2)\\\\x=\$37.88

Hence, he spend $37.88 at the first store.
