During World War I, the first Russian revolutionary government had an ill-equipped army, most of its soldiers were against the war and their resources were drained. Poor people were starving and didn't have anything to eat - which eventually lead to civil war as well.
The reason why they continued fighting the Germans was because they wanted to drive them out and they wanted to live as free people.
