Some glands affect multiple functions in the body, and other glands are more specialized. Consider these endocrine glands: adrenals, liver, pancreas, pituitary, salivary, and thyroid. The table categorizes these glands according to the functions they regulate. (Functions are listed in the top row.) Which labels should replace the numbers to correctly complete the table?

The right answer is 1 is Metabolism, 2 is Liver, 3 is Behavior, and 4 is Pituitary.

Metabolism is the set of chemical reactions that take place in a living being to enable it to stay alive.

Digestion is the set of transformations that food undergoes in the digestive tract before being assimilated.

The liver is a bulky organ with its 1.5 kg in the adult is the largest gland of the body. Ovoid, it is located under the diaphragm. The liver and gallbladder provide a number of essential functions of the body. Because of the importance of this organ, the diseases that affect it are often of concern.

The pancreas is considered a mixed gland because it has two functions:

* An exocrine function, which allows to secrete substances in the duodenum;

* An endocrine function, which allows to secrete substances in the bloodstream.

The pituitary is an endocrine gland located in the brain that responds to the stimuli of the hypothalamus by synthesizing specific hormones, which are released into the blood:

*corticotropic hormone (ACTH);

*thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which stimulates the secretion of thyroid hormones;

*somatotropin (GH) which stimulates cell growth;

*prolactin (LTH), which stimulates milk synthesis;

*gonadotropic (sexual) hormones, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH);

*endorphins, molecules of well-being;

*melanocortin (MSH) which stimulates the production of melanin.

The salivary glands produce saliva which is the liquid that bathes the mouth. The role of saliva is to moisten the mucous membranes of the upper digestive system, to participate in the early stages of digestion and to facilitate the progression of food from the pharynx to the esophagus and stomach (possibly as a defense). The salivary glands are glands with exocrine secretion.

The adrenal glands are located just above each kidney. They synthesize and release hormones in the blood, including adrenaline and cortisol.

It is indisputable that it is the action of the glands which determines the structure of the body; and the mental attitude - the behavioral complexes - of the individual seems to depend on physical well-being; undoubtedly, the physical well-being depends on the action and the harmonious reactions of the various glandular secretions
