katarina wrote the standard form of a linear equation as 4x – y = 8. sofiya told her that the equation was not yet in standard form and gave her the right advice for how to fix it. what advice did sofiya give to katarina?

The general standard form of a linear equation is Ax + By = C

The the adivice should be to change to 4x + (-)y = 8

This form highlight that B = -1

The standard form of a linear equation is:

Ax+By=C
this looks very similar to what Katarina wrote (so A=4, B=-1, C=8), but we need the sign before B to be negative. We can do this by adding negative -1 times y:

4x+-y=C

so the advice would be to treat "-y" as an addition of a negative term, rather than subtraction!
