Let

x--------> amount of starting rocks George had

we know that

(1)/(2)(x+5)=36 ------> equation that could be used to determine how many rocks George started with

Solve for x

(1)/(2)(x+5)=36

Multiply by
2 both sides

(x+5)=72

Subtract
5 both sides

(x+5)-5=72-5

x=67\ rocks

therefore

the answer Part a) is

The equation that could be used to determine how many rocks George started with is
(1)/(2)(x+5)=36

the answer Part b) is

67\ rocks
