When reading a play, the reader has to imagine the details of the setting and the characters' appearance.

The setting and characters of a play a vital role as they both are interrelated with each other. The setting sets the mood and behavior of the character. Also, the setting helps in describing the place and time where the scene has occurred. Through the setting the character portray the society they live, also it helps in invoking an emotional response. The setting of the play further helps to come to the scene alive and makes the reader come closer to the characters in the play.
