While Gary is using an indirect method to prove that segment DE is not parallel to segment BC in the triangle ABC shown ( I attached below the picture that should have support your question). And If he starts with the assumption that segment DE is parallel to segment BC I am pretty sure that inequality which he will use to contradict the assumption is the first option : 4:10 ≠ 6:14
