An island arc complex is formed in the region where two oceanic plates converge. The convergence of these plates results in high volcanoes, such as those that exist in the Pacific Ring of Fire, on the concave side of the arc and deep trenches on the convex side of the arc. These structures are formed deep within the ocean, as that is where the boundaries of oceanic plates are located.

A large portion of these island arc are shaped as one maritime structural plate subducts another and, by and large, produces magma at profundity beneath the abrogating plate. In any case, this is valid for those island curves that are a piece of the gathering of mountain belts which are called volcanic bends, a term which is utilized when every one of the components of the circular segment molded mountain belt are made out of volcanoes.
