Helen's shop is 60 meters wide and 80 meters long. The parking lot in front of Helen's shop is twice as long as it is wide and is 50 meters wide. What is the sum of the area of Helen's shop and the parking lot?

Helen's shop and the parking lot are both rectangular in form. The area (A) of rectangle is the product of the length (L) and width (W). Mathematically,

A = L x W

The area of Helen's shop is, A = (60 m) x (80 m) = 4800 m². That of the parking lot is,
A = 2W x W = 2(50 m) x (50 m) = 5000 m²

Thus, the sum of the areas is 9800 m².
