Why does Bierce use a flashback in section 2 of "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" instead of proceeding with the events taking place?

A sudden turn of fortune allows Farquhar to escape and make a mad dash to his far away home to embrace his wife again. Then the ending of the "occurrence" tells a surprisingly different story, a story of a successful hanging.
