The previously mentioned Dr. Lazarus (building on Dr. Selye's work) suggested that there is a difference between eustress, which is a term for positive stress, and distress, which refers to negative stress. In daily life, we often use the term "stress" to describe negative situations.

"Eustress," and "distress," are two different types of stress that a person can experience. "Eustress," is a positive form of stress that can have a good outcome on the person it is affecting. "Distress," is a bad or negative kind of stress that has a poor outcome for the person that it affects. An example of eustress would be having a hard time falling asleep because you are excited about something that is going to happen the next day, while distress might be suffering from depression because someone in your family passed away.
