Most resources recommend limiting your cover letter to specific information. You would definitely want to include your contact information and highlights of strengths. You would also absolutely need to use business letter format. You would not need to use personal background information or employment history. Employment history would be included in your resume, and personal information is not really necessary unless it directly applies to the job at hand. Hope this helps.
