Point- slope equation
Initial explanation
We know that the point-slope formula is given by:
y - y₁ = m (x - x₁)
where the terms: m, y₁ and x₁ are numbers.
m is the slope of the line
y₁ is the y value of that given point
x₁ is the x value of that given point
The equation for this case
In this case we have that
m = -2
The line intercepts the point (x₁, y₁) = (0, 1)
then
x₁ = 0 and y₁ = 1
Let's replace those values in the first formula:
y - y₁ = m (x - x₁)
↓ replacing m = -2, x₁ = 0 and y₁ = 1
y - 1 = -2 (x - 0)
↓ since (x - 0) = x
y - 1 = -2x
Answer: the equation for the line is y - 1 = -2x
