(3xy)^5

Explanation:

Exponents are a short cut for multiplying.

The little number raised up on the right shoulder is the EXPONENT.

The normal fontsized number on the line is a BASE.

(*I have to use a ^ symbol to show exponents, bc I can't do the smallfont raised number, but it looks like you can)

You have 3xy multiplied times itself 5 times.

So 3xy is the base. 5 is the exponent.

BUUUUT, throw some parenthesis around the (3xy) so that the exponent 5 means to go to the 3 and the x and the y. With NO parenthesis it would mean that the exponent only goes to the y and thats wrong.

Also, there's the tiniest chance the computer wants you to figure out the number part 3^5, which is 243. In which case the answer would be

243(xy)^5 OR

243x^5y^5 but i dont think so, i like the orginal posted answer the best. They are all equivalent.
