what characteristic of living things is important to the survival of a group rather than an individual member of this group?

We should always take note that populations evolve, not individuals. Therefore, for evolution to take place, it should be population wise. An individual adapts for a selected for trait. This trait is reproduced such that it is best for survival. Successful reproduction of these effective traits will cause for these to evolve in future generations.
