Edward wants to determine which skateboarder won a race. The actual time taken by four skateboarders to skate the same distance is shown below:

Skateboarder A B C D
Time (in seconds) 4.28 4.24 4.26 4.25

If the stopwatch can measure to the nearest tenth of a second, which skateboarder will show as having a different time from the others?

Answer: B will show different time from the other.

Explanation:

Since we have given that

Skateboarder Time ( in seconds)

A 4.28

B 4.24

C 4.26

D 4.25

Now, we round off to the nearest tenth of a second,

Time taken by A = 4.28 = 4.3 seconds

Time taken by B = 4.24 = 4.2 seconds

Time taken by C = 4.26 = 4.3 seconds

Time taken by D = 4.25 = 4.3 seconds

So, if the stopwatch can measure to the nearest tenth of a second,

'B' skateboarder will show as having a different time from the other.

Hence, B will show different time from the other.

The time, which will show different time from others when rounded to the nearest tenth of a second, is 4.24. The tenths place of 4.24 is below 5 which will result to 4.2. While the tenths place of 4.28, 4,26, and 4.25 when rounded to nearest tenth of a second will result to 4.3.
