What impact did emperor constantine's establishment of the "new rome" (constantinople) have on the roman empire?

It shifted the balance of power from Rome to the East. As the West declined, the Eastern Empire prospered. Constantinople became the new center of the empire's political and commercial power because of the new challenges there. Rome was too far from the "action" as it were.
