$1689 - $882 - $181 - $116 = Cost of gasoline.

Cost of gasoline = $510

$510/8482 = 0.06$ (2 d.p.) per mile

Answer:

The average cost of the gasoline 6.02 cents. ( approx )

Explanation:

Given,

Total spending = $ 1689,

Expenses are,

Insurance = $ 882

Registration = $ 181

Maintenance = $ 116

Thus, the total expenses = $ 1179

And, the spending on gasoline = Total spending - total expenses

= $ 1689 - $ 1179

= $ 510,

= 51000 cent ( 1 dollar = 100 cent )

Now, it is given that he drove 8482 miles,

Hence, the average cost of the gasoline per mile =
(51000)/(8482) = 6.01273284603 ≈ 6.01 cent.
