The answer to the question is a preposition and a conjunction. The word "for" is a preposition as it is used before "he" to relate this pronoun to the squirrel. For is also a conjunction here in that it is connecting two independent clauses together, this one "the squirrel reached for the birdfeeder" and this one, "he saw it was filled with an abundance of sunflower seeds."
