Heartwood is a wood that is found in the center of the wood whereas, the sapwood is found at the periphery. The color of the heartwood is dark because it accumulates the nutrients, water and minerals in it but does not allow the transport of these substances to the overall tree or plant. The sapwood is active in distribution of these substances to the overall tree and plants. Therefore, is lighter in color.

The reason why heartwood is darker colors than sapwood is because the heartwood is closer to the center of the stem. Sapwood is away from the center of the stem. This is the reason for the color difference.
