When you inhale or breathe in, your diaphragm tightens and moves downward. This is to increase the space in your chest cavity to make the lungs expand.

Aside from the diaphragm helping to expand the chest cavity, the intercostal muscles found between your ribs also help enlarge the chest cavity.
