For this math problem, you need to follow a few steps to solve for Y:

We need to isolate Y on to one side of the equation. Since we are adding 1/2 to Y, we would do the opposite-subtract 1/2-from both sides of the equation, in order to isolate and solve for Y.

We end up with this equation:

Y = -3/4 - 1/2. Convert 1/2 to 2/4ths, then do your math to solve for Y

y+(1)/(2)=-(3)/(4)\ \ \ |Add\ (1)/(2)\ to\ each\ side\\\\ y=-(3)/(4)-(1)/(2) \ \ \ |Make\ a common\ denominator\\\\ y=-(3)/(4)-(2)/(4)\\\\ y=-(5)/(4)=-1(1)/(4)\\\\ y=-1(1)/(4)
