By allowing humans to settle down in one place, as opposed to having to follow animal migration patterns for a source of food, agriculture paved the way for modern civilization as humans began settling plots of land that eventually turned into towns and then cities. This also allowed for a massive population boom, as with more readily available food more offspring could be easily provided for.
