2x + 3y = -6 . . . . . . . . (1)
x - y = 4 . . . . . . . . (2)
From (2), x = 4 + y
Substituting for x into (1), we have,
2(4 + y) + 3y = -6
8 + 2y + 3y = -6
8 + 5y = -6
5y = -6 - 8 = -14
y = -14/5 = -2.8 = approximately -3
x = 4 + y
x = 4 + (-3)
x = 4 - 3
x = 1
i.e. x = 1 and y = -3
