Why did so many Northerners oppose the Dred Scott decision

they were concerned that laws prohibited slavery in the north might be overturned.

Dred Scott moved to Illinois with his owner. When his owner died, he became a free man. The Congress decided that Scott could not file a lawsuit because he was a property and not a citizen of America.
