A fruit vendor sells 60 pieces of fruit that are either apples or oranges. There are 12 more apples than oranges.

a) Write a system of linear equations that represents this situation.

b) How many apples and oranges did the vendor sell?

Answer:

a. let x be the number of apples and let y be the number of oranges

x + y = 60

x = y + 12

b. Apples: 24 Oranges: 36
