Most of the hurricanes that affect the east coast of the United States originally form over the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean in Summer. There hurricanes usually move towards the west northwest after being formed in the tropical and subtropical latitudes. In the Atlantic, this motion most likely than not brings the hurricane into the vicinity of the U.S. East Coast.
