Why does DNA has an overall negative charge?

A DNA strand contains a polymer of nucleotides that form bonds between phosphate groups. This would form into compounds made from the hydroxyl pentose from another nucleotide. This process would often use two OH acids and the last one can ionize freely. Because of this, the charge would be negative
