Why did the 1918 influenza outbreak cause so many deaths?

Mainly elderly people were affected.
Hygiene and sanitation were very poor at this time.
The influenza virus was a strain of an older virus to which people had no immunity.
The World Health Organization had not yet been created.

B. Hygiene and sanitation were very poor at the time of the outbreak. This is because germs were not considered harmful so sanitation and hygiene were unimportant.
