Answer:

The number is 42.

Explanation:

Given word problem "One-third of a number, decreased by six equals eight"

We have to find the number.

Consider the given problem "One-third of a number, decreased by six equals eight"

Let the number be x,

This can be expressed mathematically as ,

One-third of a number written as
(1)/(3)x

One-third of a number, decreased by six expressed as
(1)/(3)x-6

then whole expression become,
(1)/(3)x-6=8

Now, solving for the above expression
(1)/(3)x-6=8

Adding 6 both sides, we have,

(1)/(3)x-6+6=8+6

(1)/(3)x=14

Multiply both side by 3 , we get,

x=14* 3=42

Thus, the number is 42.
