A farmer has one square mile of land. Suppose the farmer buys another half square miles of land and divide all his land into Square field quarter mile long and a quarter mile wide how many fields will he have.

The total land is 1.5 square mile.

If the fields have dimensions of 1/4 mile by 1/4 mile, the field area will be:


A_f=((1)/(4))^2=(1)/(16)

We can now calculate the maximum number of fields as the quotient of the total area and the area of the field:


n=(A)/(A_f)=(1.5)/((1)/(16))=1.5\cdot16=24\text{ }fields

If the length and width of the land is multiple of 1/4 miles, the number of fields can be 24.

Answer: 24 fields
