Which events increased tensions between the Japan and the United States in the late 1930s?

In the 1930's Japan went to war with China. The United States supported China and placed a trade embargo on Japan so they couldn't get any supplies from the United States, particularly oil that might fuel Japan's military conquests.

Japan barred trade with the U.S.

Explanation: Pearl Harbor happened in the 40’s and the invasion of French Indochina along with them joining the axis powers also happened in the 1940’s. Also they weren’t Allies.
