Okay, this is really easy:) He goes 3/8 miles and 1 and 3/8 miles. to add this together you just go across the top. Discard the 1 for a couple of seconds. so you have 3/8 + 3/8. Now go across the top so you get 6/8. simplify that, (divide by a common number, don't know if you know that or not) so, 2 in this case. you get 3/4. Your answer is 1 and 3/4. Hope this helps and isn't ridiculously confusing:)
