Divide by applying long division;

We begin by dividing 1275 by 588. The result is 2, remainder 99.

Since 99 cannot divide 588 (its smaller in value), then we insert a decimal and immediately insert a zero after 99 and thats how we came about 990.

Next, 990 divided by 588 equals 1 remainder 402. We insert the 1 after the decimal, and to continue, we divide 402 by 588. Seeing that this is not possible (its also smaller in value), we insert a zero behind this number too and we now have 4020. Divide this by 588 and we have 6 remainder 492. We repeat the process with the remainder (that is 492 now becomes 4920) and dividing further...,
