Why do coastal habitats have distinct characteristics ?!!

A coastal habitat is influenced by the sea:
it is tidal - plants could be submerged occasionally, salt water can blow inland on the wind, the wind can be destructive

Plants habitating a coastal area need to be hardy with respect to the above.
