The answer is lipids.

The sequence of DNA specifies the sequence of mRNA, which, further, specifies codes for the sequence of proteins. Simply, DNA codes for RNA and RNA codes for proteins. So, primarily, nucleic acids and proteins are basic parts of life. Even viruses contain nucleic acid and proteins. So, to reveal the history of life it is necessary to take a look on the basic of life.
