Fractions have two part. The denominator and the numerator.

The denominator in a fraction represents the total number of equal size pieces that make up a whole. For example 7/12 of a foot means one foot is broken into 12 equal sized divisions.

The numerator in a fraction represents the number of pieces selected. If the numerator is larger than the denominator, the number is larger than one. For example, 15/12 of a foot is equivalent to

12/12 + 3/12 = 1 + 3/12 = 1 1/4.

A common denominator is needed when adding, subtracting and comparing fractions because each object needs to be cut into the exact same size pieces to be able to combine, remove or compare.
