Given a rectangle with length l and width w, then

\text{ the area of the rectangle = }lw

In this case,

\text{ the area of the rectangle = }103(1)/(8)ft^2=(825)/(8)ft^2

and

l=12(1)/(2)ft=(25)/(2)ft

Therefore, we have

(825)/(8)=(25)/(2)* w

this implies that

\begin{gathered} (25w)/(2)=(825)/(8) \\ \text{Cross}-\text{ mulitplying, we have} \\ 25w*8=2*825 \\ \text{this implies that} \\ 200w=2*825 \end{gathered}
w=(2*825)/(200)=(825)/(100)=8(25)/(100)=8(1)/(4)ft
