Answer: a. a desire to retreat from society when necessary.

In Walden, Thoreau tells us of his experience living away from society in a cabin for two years. He decided to embark in this adventure because he believed there is value in retreating from society. He believed that introspection and self-reliance are extremely important for humans, and that these are sometimes negatively impacted by our desire to be part of society.

The answer is B. Thoreau thinks that there is a need to restructure society along more just lines. Thoreau's actions reveal that he sees how the society is corrupt. And that the best possible option for him is to live life in the woods reconnecting with nature.
