Rome's location on the top of hills undoubtedly made it easy to defend. It's location in central Italy provided a vantage point for domination of the entire peninsula. Similarly, it was well-located to dominate first the western and then the entire Mediterranean.

Constantine thought Rome's position was a disadvantage in trying to trade with the east, so he built a new city on the Bosporus Strait.
