Carbon-14 is a radioactive isotope of carbon and is used primarily in radiocarbon dating at archaeological sites since we know the half life for carbon-14 and the ratio of carbon-12 and carbon-14 a living thing probably had when it died and the difference in that ratio can tell us how old the object is.
