Wells were used in olden days to store and use water. During those days mechanical pulleys were used to extract water out of wells but now a days modern pumps and lifting equipment are used for bringing underground water to the users.

These days water is supplied through pipes and no traditional bucket or rope is used for pulling out water out of the ground. Though wells exists even today but its usage as a primary source of fresh drinking water is no longer in system but rather they are preferred as water storage units.
