Does an antagonist have to be a villain?

An antagonist does not have to be a villain. Although some use these words interchangeably, they have different meanings. An antagonist simply disagrees to the viewpoints of the protagonist, while a villain destroys a person or thing relevant to the plot of the story. Therefore, the key word here is motive.
