The answer for this question is that it was the Tokugawa shogun, or the general, who was overthrown as a result of the Meiji Restoration. The restoration marked the return of power to the Emperor and the end of the feudal period. The emperor chose the name of Meiji, which is Japanese for enlightened ruler, which is why we now refer to this period as the Meiji restoration.
