\begin{gathered} x-3y=6 \\ 2x-y=-8 \end{gathered}
x=6+3y

Using subtitution method

\begin{gathered} 2(6+3y)-y=-8 \\ 12+6y-y=-8 \\ 12+5y=-8 \\ 5y=-8-12 \\ 5y=-20 \\ y=(-20)/(5) \\ y=-4 \end{gathered}
\begin{gathered} x-3y=6 \\ x-3(-4)=6 \\ x+12=6 \\ x=6-12 \\ x=-6 \end{gathered}
