When metals are exposed to air and moisture in the air (humidity), this often results to the oxidation of these metals. Zinc is a material often used as a coating or barrier  to these metals to protect them from corrosion or oxidation. This is due to its low tendency to corrode. When zinc oxide forms, a white powdery substance can be observed on the surface.
