A truck can be rented from Company A for $100 a day plus $0.40 per mile. Company B charges $20dayplus $0.90 per mile to rent the same truck. How many miles must be driven in a day to make the rental cost for Company A less than the rental cost of Company B?

and the total charges be y

y= 100+0.4x-----------1

Company B

charges $20dayplus $0.90 per mile

y= 20+0.9x---------------2

Equate 1 and 2

100+0.4x= 20+0.9x

collect like terms

100-20=0.9x-0.4x

80= 0.5x

divide both sides by 0.5

x=80/0.5

x=160 miles

Hence the number of miles is 160 miles
